A commission for a viral video is difficult for any level of influencer, especially when you're asked to star in the production as well. Clients requested something that would stand out and fit into a trend they saw going viral at the time that involved high-production, over-the-top edits and lots of humor.
After initial pitch was greenlit, clients expressed a desire to connect the aesthetics and themes to their heritage and popular trends of Japanese gaming and otaku culture. Aesthetic changes were made and Ai was used to generate voice overs that emulated popular media in the space. A soundtrack was also created for the video.
A concept that felt familiar but also new to the space is a POV-style game of ping pong, riddled with effects and dramatic pacing to make it look like a retro video game.
New and trendy components were the mechanics of the ping pong "video-game" which took inspiration from the shooting mechanics from the basketball game NBA2K—one of the most popular games ever. And the POV component is also trending, especially rising in popularity amongst sports and task-related content.
Nostalgic components were the 80s video game aesthetics and callbacks to Japanese anime. Both new and old elements ground the original concept and make users believe and wonder why something like this doesn't already exist.
